Matthew Hall leans forward with his elbows on his knees. His head is down. He is playing with the silver wedding band that glows against his sun-stained skin. Nearly two months before today’s conversation, he was working in the fields with his back bent toward the sky and his fingers knuckle-deep in the soil of a sweet potato bed. His wife, Terra, had just loaded up the truck and driven across the Missouri River to make their first deliveries of the season to CSA members. Then the skies changed color.

They founded Rhizosphere Farm in 2009, on the Nebraska side of the river, and spent the next three years cultivating rented land. Eventually the couple decided to take a chance and invest in land of their own. The stakes were high; such a decision meant they would have to take a year off of farming, suspend their restaurant client relationships, and live with Matthew’s parents while they worked multiple jobs and saved money. Even still, it was a risk they were willing to take. To be a farmer, you have to be gambler, and Matthew and Terra committed to rolling the dice.
